You know when you're a food addict...this addiction comes from either the fact that for the past 12 out of the last 30 years you've been a photographer, or photographing food is your specialty. For food photographers, it's not just a matter of being addicted to the way it tastes, but by the way food appeals to all the senses. The sound of a skirt steak when it first hits an oiled skillet, the smell freshly cut mango, the texture of warm grits in the mouth, or the wonderful sight of warm butter as it slides off an ear of corn. Some are especially addicted to the sheer beauty of food arranged on a plate. To us, a beautiful image of food is the ultimate visual metaphor of anticipation and awakens all the other senses.

Sometimes it’s for national clients whose names you might recognize, sometimes for local shops or purveyors, and once in awhile for single entrepreneurs with a great idea for which they feel the world is ready. A food photographer loves seeing a photograph that effectively works towards selling a product or making the consumer/buyer take action towards trying a new product or a new idea.

Hopefully those of you who read this will find similar points of interest as we share some of the photographic, culinary and business experiences we’ve had here at Polara Studio. In the meantime, enjoy this shot of a glass of wine, done for Ponzi Vineyards, that goes against the grain of a the normal “frozen splash” shot and in our eyes shows all the motion and emotion that goes into pouring a great glass of Oregon pinot noir.
