January
is always a good time to reflect on the years past, these images are from one
of the earliest cookbooks I’ve done. The whole book was shot on location in
Nancy Ponzi’s kitchen overlooking the Aurora Vineyard. Long hours and a heavy
shot count made for hard work, greatly mitigated by our amazing food stylist, Carrol
Ladd, and of course Nancy Ponzi, who made it all as easy and
tasty as it could be.
Oh, and did I mention the lunch shoots where we ate what we shot? Foe example, on the first day, grilled salmon and baked savoy cabbage, next day thinly sliced flank steak with farro salad and fresh radishes...all served with the appropriate wine...life does have its rewards. ;-)
This cookbook is still in circulation- available at Powell’s and Amazon – The Ponzi Vineyard Cookbook is filled with photography as beautiful as the recipes were tasty.
Michael Shay is a food photographer with Polara Studio based in Portland, Oregon. More examples of his work can be found at http://polarastudio.com/photos/food/. His hobbies include home brewing, motorcycling and practicing traditional Japanese karate, not necessarily in that order.
